Matthew Broadbent

Hot Milk

Matthew Broadbent is Ingrid Bauer’s partner, whose presence reaches into both Sofia Papastergiadis’s relationship with Ingrid and the care of Sofia’s mother, Rose Papastergiadis. Across a handful of encounters, he appears as an assertive boundary-crosser: he enters a workroom without permission, intervenes in Rose’s treatment from Spain, and, in Sofia’s view, monitors Ingrid’s movements.

Identity and Introduction

Matthew first appears in Julieta Gómez’s studio carrying a bottle of wine. Seeing Sofia seated there, he visibly jolts, then tries to compose his face into neutrality. Sofia likens that strained effort to her difficulty selecting neutral gear in the Berlingo. He explains that he has come to give Rose’s nurse a bottle from his cellar, presenting the visit as a practical errand connected to Rose’s care.

The explanation does not resolve the problem of how he arrived. Julieta objects that Matthew has shouted through her letterbox and entered without knocking, despite a bell bearing her name beside the door. She says he seems to think he can do as he likes, and insists that she must be alone with him to teach him manners. His entrance therefore introduces a pattern of disregard for other people’s boundaries, while Julieta’s rebuke makes the breach explicit.

Intervention in Rose’s Care

Matthew’s involvement in Rose’s medical situation also extends across distance. While Sofia is at a meat market, she receives a message from him in Spain saying that Dr Gómez must be stopped. The message refers to Rose having needed rehydration at Dr Gómez’s clinic the previous day and dismisses the doctor as a quack. Sofia’s immediate response is to wonder why Matthew has become involved in her mother’s care.

The message arrives amid Sofia’s own concern about Rose’s refusal to drink water. When Sofia calls Dr Gómez, he reassures her that Rose is in good health, that staff take turns being with her every day, and that her morale is high since her medication was abandoned. He confirms, however, that Rose has become dehydrated because she will not drink. Matthew’s intervention thus arrives against a complicated picture: Rose is doing well in some respects, but her hydration remains a real concern. The available scenes establish Matthew’s forceful opposition to Dr Gómez, but do not explain the full basis for his involvement or show the outcome of his demand.

Relationship with Ingrid and Sofia

Sofia interprets Matthew’s phone calls to Ingrid as control. When Ingrid’s mobile rings while she is with Sofia on the beach, Sofia identifies the caller as Matthew and thinks he is keeping tabs on where Ingrid is and on her being with Sofia. Ingrid answers by telling him she is on the beach and asking whether he can hear the sea; Sofia then reaches for the phone and takes it from her hand. The moment places Matthew’s monitoring, as Sofia understands it, inside the tension between Ingrid and Sofia, although the scene does not disclose what Matthew says on the call.

In a later exchange, Matthew tells Sofia that the bottle she and Ingrid took from his cellar was a mid-range wine worth about three hundred pounds and says she should pay half. His hands are full with a box of clothes, so he waggles one of his white espadrilles for emphasis. Sofia laughs, then asks him to tell Ingrid that Pablo’s dog is alive and free and can swim because it has a sea past. The exchange puts a precise price on the stolen wine while Sofia redirects their encounter to the dog’s freedom. Together with the earlier studio visit, it presents Matthew as a persistent presence in the lives of Sofia and Ingrid, though the evidence leaves his motives and the subsequent state of their relationships unresolved.
